German MP: Immunity of MPs may be suspended by law authorities

schedule 11:27 - 28 Tetor, 2023

The German MP, Gunther Krichbaum, has commented on the recent decisions of the Special Prosecution against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK), where the former Prime Minister Sali Berisha is under the “compulsion to appear” measure, while his son-in-law is behind bars for the issue of the privatization of the “Partizani” complex.

In a press conference in Albania, Krichbaum said that SPAK is doing its job, while the statements about politicization are absurd. According to him, the work of justice institutions should be protected and not attacked.

“The statements about the politicization of SPAK are absurd, we should protect it, not attack it. Immunity is not a privilege for certain parliamentarians. It protects the functionality of the parliament. Which means; during Nazi Germany, when German MPs were sent to prison, the Nazis had a majority in parliament. That’s why it’s immune. It guarantees and protects the functionality of the parliament, but not of individual parliamentarians. Immunity may be suspended by law enforcement authorities.

These are dealt with across party lines, in Germany. When it comes to questioning immunity issues, there should be no doubt. No other way should be accepted. I want to be very clear. As for the fight against corruption, the following is self-evident. War is not an end in itself.

Corruption affects the poorest of the poor in the country. Everyone is equal before the law. The fight against corruption must be serious. On the part of the Budenstag, this is a matter that is followed very closely”, he said.
