The Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, hosted today the President of Hungary, Katalin Novák. Veliaj, who gave to the Hungarian president with the ‘Key to the City’, said that this gift, now a tradition of the Municipality of Tirana, is a symbol of Albanian generosity and hospitality.

He appreciated the fact that Albania and Hungary have a history of good relations together.

“Hungary has been a friend of Albania for centuries, and as much as I love history, looking back at the past inspires you, but it doesn’t say much about the future. What said most about the future is what we are doing now, what you are doing with Hungarian companies, what you are doing with Hungarian technical support for water and with wonderful friends like you.

So let’s be great friends of history, but let’s forge history together for the next 500 years. On behalf of the city of Tirana, I would like to give you the Key to the City and consider Tirana as your new home,” said Mayor Veliaj.

President Novák also appreciated the hospitality and friendship with Albania and Albanians as she invited the mayor to visit her country.

“We Hungarians are known as lively people and good friends because we are honest and straightforward with others. We are also open to discussions, you know that.

This also means that if you rely on us once, you can always rely on us. This is the reason why we have become friends with the Albanian people.

I can promise you that now that we have this Key, we will never come to Tirana without further notice. Also, you are also welcome in our capital, in our country,” she said.

The Hungarian President and Mayor Veliaj also laid a wreath at the memorial dedicated to Queen Geraldine.
