The parties have encountered another stalemate over the Electoral Reform agreement.
After the Socialist Party paved the way for the parliamentary opposition proposal to open the lists, the Democratic Party came out against it. In a statement, the DP said the opening of the debate on the electoral system at the moment is just an alibi for Rama aiming to delay the codification of the agreement reached on June 5th.
The DP states that any unilateral action in this regard constitutes a breach of the consensual agreement with consequences to the detriment of the country’s European future.
“The parties to the Political Council signed the Electoral Reform Agreement on June 5, with the mediation and support of the United States and the European Union. The Democratic Party is not against discussing the revision of the electoral system, but it requires a complete reform of the constitutional system for which the DP has a concrete proposal.
This process must be transparent and decision-making must belong to the citizens, through a popular referendum. The OSCE / ODIHR has confirmed that such changes cannot take place one year before the elections.
The head of the SP Parliamentary Group, Taulant Balla stated today in the Assembly that the majority is ready to discuss the opening of the lists, to reach an agreement with the parliamentary opposition.
On the other hand, her vote has been conditioned for the Election with the resolution of this point, which according to her will return to the Albanians the free and honest vote./abcnews.al
