Murders in Albania stand at the highest level, ranking fifth in Europe for the murder rate per 100,000 residents. According to INSTAT for the last two years, the murder rate per 100,000 residents was 1.8, among the highest compared to European Union countries.
68 people lost their lives in 2018 and the same number were in 2017.
The number of intentional homicides dropped compared to 2016, where as a result of this crime the number of murders reached 99.
But how do we compare to the countries of the European Union?
Compared to EU member states, Albania ranks among the high-rate countries. The Baltic countries hold the record in the European Union.
In Latvia, the murder rate per 100,000 population was 5.6, followed by Lithuania with 4 deaths per 100,000 population and Estonia with 2.2 homicide per 100,000 population.
The island state of Malta had a high homicide rate .According to Eurostat the number of murders there per 100,000 population was 2.
Belgium ranks first behind Albania, with 1.7 murders per 100,000 residents.
On the other hand, the lowest murder rate per 100,000 residents is estimated in Luxembourg with 0.3 homicides, followed by Norway and Switzerland with 0.5 homicides per 100,000 residents.
