The President of the Republic, Bajram Begaj, has signed the decree for the granting of criminal amnesty. The decree signed by the head of state comes a few days after the criminal amnesty was approved in the Parliament of Albania, with 110 votes in favor.
This broad parliamentary vote will immediately release 700 people from prison and reduce the sentences of 400 others. Another 2,700 will no longer be required to continue their probationary service.
Amnesty will cease the investigation of over 200 cases which include offenses with a maximum sentence of 2 years. Senior officials will not benefit from this article. The release of prisoners will begin after the law is decreed by the President./abcnews.al
