The second round of negotiations took place today between the majority and that part of the opposition that has agreed to become part of the process regarding the name of the President of the Republic. According to the decision of the Conference of Presidents a few days ago, the Parliament will inaugurate on Monday, May 15, the first round of voting for the election of the head of state. This will be the first attempt, but as confirmed today by all parties, it seems that the first round will be exhausted without a name, leaving the choice for the next four rounds.
This is because the Socialists have confirmed that they will not come up with a name of their own in the first round to give the opportunity to the opposition to be part of the process. On the other hand, despite the great lack of trust between the parties, the PD Parliamentary Group, including the allies, have agreed to be part of the process, giving strong warnings to the Socialists not to use them only to legitimize the process. and then elect the President themselves with their votes.
Enkelejd Alibeaj also made this clear a little while ago, emphasizing that the majority can not elect the President with its votes, since according to him, 4-5 deputies supported by Aqif Rakipi and Tom Doshi are part of the SP Parliamentary Group. who have been declared “non grata” by the US.
Alibeaj stressed that such a vote would be illegitimate, while he did not meet with the Socialists, unlike Fatmir Mediu, Mesila Doda and Shpetim Idrizi.
What happens now?
While the first round without a name is exhausted on Monday, this gives the parties time until the second round to find the names who will be put to the vote. With the passing of the first round without a name, the chances of the opposition to put pressure on the majority to agree decrease, because in the last two rounds, ie the fourth and fifth, the SP will have the opportunity to vote for the President with 71 votes. legitimizing this also with the fact that they can not lead the country to elections again after less than a year and a half after April 2021.
