German Minister for Europe Michael Roth in his statement after meeting with opposition leader Lulzim Basha said that he was closely acquainted with all the concerns about the 25th April election process.
Roth stressed that in relation to this process they trust the ODIHR as in any case where there are elections.
He also stressed that the European perspective of Albania is the only path that should be followed now, where he said he hopes that the opposition and the majority find a common language.
He also singled out the developments so far in the European Council, where he stressed that on June 22 he hopes that Albania will open negotiations and create the opportunity for an international conference.
“All issues addressed should be clarified by the relevant authorities and institutions. In relation to this process we trust the ODIHR. I agree with Basha when he says that Albania’s future is in the EU and nowhere else. whether this path will be successful depends not only on the government but also on the parliament and the opposition and I wish that a common path is found between the government and the opposition. In a democratic system we are not enemies with each other but we are competitors, and the parliament is the one that sends the country’s goals forward. The meeting with Basha, the leader of the Albanian opposition, is very important.
The European Commission has carefully considered all of Albania’s efforts to meet the conditions for the opening of negotiations and the joint intergovernmental membership conference. The Commission has reached a positive judgment and we hope that on 22 June the EU Council will arrive at the opening of negotiations and the holding of a joint intergovernmental membership conference. “This is an important step and it is a long way, Germany will support it, the opening of negotiations does not mean that Albania met the conditions but that it is a clear perspective towards the EU”, stated the minister./abcnews.al
