Prime Minister Edi Rama has reiterated that Albania will change course if negotiations do not open in June. In a joint conference with the President of the Council of Europe, Charles Michel, the head of government said that this idea is also supported by Albanian citizens.
According to him, the detachment from the common path of integration with Northern Macedonia will be done to escape the “claws” of Bulgaria, as he called it.
“For the part with Macedonia, we are in line with the European Commission and by the end of the meeting, we hope that Bulgaria will pave the way.
In case it does not happen we will change the course. We have also consulted with the public here. “A majority said that Albania should break away from the claws of Bulgaria,” he said.
At the same time, in his speech, Charles Michel also touched upon the idea of the associated EU member thrown by President Macron, which he said he had discussed with Prime Minister Rama and they agreed that this paves the way for a more cooperation.
“I also took the initiative for our friends from the Western Balkans to participate in this roundtable. On the other hand it is important that we do not wait for the final decision on membership, but you have the platform.
We think it’s a good thing for us to talk. Not that we find another justification, but to give it a bigger political impetus.
A few months ago we were all in Sweden and exchanged ideas with each other. The Prime Minister told me how important it is to involve all leaders at the political level. An idea that is very close to associate members. “We want to have the right formats,” he said.
The Prime Minister considered the idea of an associate member of the EU very important, which, as he says, creates a new European political community.
“The idea of an associate member of the EU is an idea that is gaining more support. I have followed and fully support the vision of the President of France. A new European political community, other countries to be involved. We are much closer to the EU.
