The European Union is in favor of the initiative to declare the Vjosa River a “National Park”. EU Ambassador to Albania Luigi Soreca wrote on Twitter that he is following this issue closely, emphasizing the voice of local communities and experts.
“We support the initiative for the creation of the Vjosa National Park. EU continues to follow this closely together with the EU MSs Embassies and in consultation with the Albanian authorities. “It is crucial that the voice of local communities and environmental experts is heard,” wrote Soreca.
Earlier this month, PErmet residents staged a protest against a company that had planned to drill for oil and gas in the Vjosa River. After the protest the company withdrew.
Many famous figures, including Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio, have demanded the declaration of the Vjosa as a National Park. DiCaprio has stated that this status ‘will protect the area from dams and a new threat like oil and gas drilling’./ abcnews.al
