Hearing against former Prime Minister Sali Berisha for the approval of the Prosecutor’s Office’s request for “house arrest” for the investigative file on the privatization of the former “Partizani” sports complex will be held this Wednesday, at 11:00.
On Tuesday, the session was postponed due to the request of the defense lawyers, who asked for more time, to familiarize themselves with the documents and evidence presented by the Prosecutor’s Office.
They also requested the dismissal of judge Irena Gjoka, claiming that the latter has a conflict of interest with the former prime minister, who, according to them, dismissed her from office in 1996.
According to this letter from the Supreme Judicial Council, it appears that Irena Gjoka was dismissed in February 1996 from the position of judge of Fier by Sali Berisha, the head of the Supreme Council of Justice.
But 6 months later, she was appointed again to the same position in the Court of Gjirokastra. This re-appointment renders meaningless the allegations of dismissal and conflict of interest between the former Prime Minister, already under investigation, and the judge who today has his file in hand.
Last Friday, the Assembly decided with 75 votes in favor of lifting Sali Berisha’s immunity, thus placing him in the hands of justice.
Meanwhile, the Special Prosecutor’s Office has requested “house arrest” for Berisha, under the supervision of State Police employees.
