In Albania, new cases of coronavirus increased slightly during the last week (November 9-15), while the number of victims decreased. But in hospitals there is a doubling of patients treated in intensive care.
According to official data processed by VOA, a total of 3914 infected were registered, an increase of only 1.4 percent compared to the previous week. The daily average was 559 cases.
On the other hand, the tests remain at low quotas, for a total of 21,656 buffers, or 3.1 percent less. What stands out is the fact that for the 6th week in a row, the positivity (ratio between new cases and tests) has been increasing and the average of the last week is at the 18 percent quota, or 0.8 percentage points more than the previous week. Positivity is an indicator of virus transmission in the community.
Also in progressive increase, since 5 weeks, are the active cases which on Monday were at the level of 8433 affected. More than half of them (4449 active cases) are registered in the district of Tirana, while in all other regions they are below the quota of 1 thousand cases.
For the second week in a row, the number of victims came down. In total during the last week 31 deaths were registered, 4 less than a week ago. Monday was the day with the highest level. The Ministry of Health announced 7 loss of life: three citizens from Tirana aged 53-79, one citizen from Kruja 61 years old, one citizen from Saranda 70 years old, one citizen from Fier 71 years old, and one citizen from Durrës 74 years old.
But the situation in hospitals, although a growing trend, has been more or less the same. According to ministry data, 172 patients were hospitalized as of Monday afternoon. Strongly growing, there are severe cases, ending up in intensive therapy, that have almost doubled. On Monday, 29 critically ill patients were reported, up from 15 a week ago.
While there are no signs of an improvement in the pandemic situation, vaccination rates fell again in the first half of November. Official data processed by VOA, show that over 62 thousand people received the first or second doses, or a daily average of 4439 doses. This figure is 18.4 percent lower than in October, during which vaccination rates fell by 40 percent. Slightly more than 1.47 million people, or 46.7 percent of the population over the age of 16, have received at least one dose. Of these, over 924 thousand citizens, or 41.2 percent of the population 16+, have received both doses. Over 28 thousand people have received the third booster dose, which has been implemented since the beginning of November.
