Commissioner for enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi at a press conference after the meeting of 24 delegations in Tirana in the framework of the preparations for the Berlin Process Summit that will be held in the Albanian capital.
Varhelyi said that the Berlin Process was and is the most reliable platform that shows the commitment of the EU in the Region.
He also added that the EU is making important investments in the Region, so that the latter is economically integrated into the EU, before the countries become members.
“First, I think that after we have seen that we had the summit for the Western Balkans that happened in Tirana, it is not a surprise that the Berlin Process is also coming to Tirana.
If there is one sentence that I will always hear, it is that the EU should come to the Western Balkans. The Berlin process is a very good platform for our expansion and engagement in the Western Balkans.
I think that the Berlin Process was and will continue to be the most reliable platform where we show our interest in the Region. We are talking here about big political projects, but also about projects that affect the daily life of citizens and how we will bring the EU here in the Western Balkans.
We have also seen that the EC, since the day the commissioners started their work, we have made it clear that EU expansion is a key priority, so we have also brought the economic investment plan.
I am proud to say that we have done half the work so far. The region must be economically integrated with the EU, before its countries become members of the EU,” said the commissioner.
