US Embassy to Tirana has underlined this Thursday that they believe that functional democratic institutions, including an opposition, are vital for any healthy democracy, when it comes to the clashes in the Democratic Party about the head of the DP parliamentary group.
In a reaction for the local media, the Embassy states that it is not its role to choose who leads the political parties in Albania, but adds that they have not changed their position regarding individuals declared non-women in Albania, while emphasizing that they encourage all actors to carefully consider their engagements with such figures.
“The United States believes that functioning democratic institutions, including an opposition, are vital to any healthy democracy. The United States regularly meets with parliamentary committees on key legislation, such as the Ombudsman, which plays a role important in the justice reform.
It is not the role of the embassy to choose who leads the political parties in Albania. Also, we have not changed our position regarding publicized individuals (non-women) in Albania and urge all actors to carefully consider their engagements with such figures”, pointed out the Embassy.
