President Ilir Meta’s decision to return Anti-Defamation Package to parliament is assessed by Reporters Without Borders.

In a message on Twitter, Reporters Without Borders expresses appreciation for Meta’s decision and points out that this package is seen as a government effort to control the media.

Reporters Without Borders welcomes the decision of the President of Albania, Ilir Meta, to return to Parliament two laws on the so-called ‘anti-defamation package’, seen as an attempt of  the government to control the media in violation of the Albanian Constitution and Human Rights Conventions, ” it is said in reaction.

The day before, President Ilir Meta returned to the Assembly for reviewing the package of “anti-defamation” because, according to him, the Assembly has not yet published the content of its legal acts, creating lack of transparency towards the public.

According to him, the law violates the basic constitutional principles of a democratic state; the right to freedom of expression, media and the right to information; standards of the European Convention on Human Rights and is contrary to the jurisprudence of the Constitutional Court./abcnews.al
