Today marks the 22nd anniversary of the beginning of NATO bombing of Serbian bases in the Kosovo war.
The bombing began after numerous actions by Serbian forces, arson and mass expulsions in 1998 and after the failure of the Rambouillet Conference to reach a peace agreement with Belgrade.
After the last attempts of American mediators failed, the bombing started on March 24, 1999 at 20:00.
Further, attacks on Serbian forces ceased on June 10, 1999, the Kumanovo Agreement was signed, by which the then President of the Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia, Slobodan Milosevic, agreed to withdraw troops from Kosovo.
Serbia has estimated that the damage from NATO attacks was around 29.6 billion euros. The losses on the part of Kosovo Albanians have been enormous.
Depending on the estimates, about 15 people have lost their lives. Thousands of people are considered missing, while Serbian forces forcibly expelled more than 860,000 Kosovars from Kosovo. Below are some of the rare photos from 22 years ago, when NATO bombed Serbia to free Kosovo. /abcnews.al/
