Albanian citizens have come out this morning in protest on the occasion of International Workers’ Day. The protesters started the march from Skanderbeg Square, as they are heading towards the Prime Minister’s Office.

With banners in hand, citizens are looking for good jobs and salaries to afford living in Albania and the prices that are rising day by day.

On May 1, workers and their unions in every country of the world, protest to demand better rights and working conditions. But how did May 1 remain a symbol of workers’ day and what event is it associated with?

May 1 is born in Paris in 1889. The idea was mooted during the Second International Congress, convened in the French capital.

The objective of the organization created by the ashes of the first organization was that of coordinating the activities of all national parties related to the workers’ movement. It was decided to hold a large demonstration to ask public authorities to reduce the working day to 8 hours.

Except in the United States where Labor Day is celebrated on the first Monday in September. The holiday originated in Canada in memory of the events where workers demanded reduced working hours under the name of the “Nine Hours Movement”.
