Prime Minister Edi Rama has spoken this Monday about the project for declaring the Viosa River a National Park, saying that the Vjosa is the last wildlife river that will not enter the “circus of domestic animals of the energy system”.
During the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Tourism and Environment of Albania and the American organization “Patagonia” for the launch of joint work to declare Vjosa a “National Park”, the Head of Government stressed that Vjosa will produce a future in another form.
Meanwhile, PM Rama ironized the critics who have speculated the possibility of building hydropower plants in Vjosa.
“Patagonia has what we need more than anything else. It is the knowledge and experience in a field like this of protection through the national park system of an important part of the country that seems easy, but it is very difficult. The Vjosa passes through the body of Albania. It enters from one side and exits from the other. To say national park is word of mouth, while in this length stretches a whole population that needs development.
When they tell us that this is the last wild river in Europe they pretend to forget that they have tamed other wild rivers for themselves and they want this one wild. We are doing it because we are doing it with full conviction that this is the future.
We cannot build a reserve to make people angry. We are building a space for a development that protects the environment and nourishes the generations that we will leave the Vjosa as legacy.
