The President of the country, Bajram Begaj, in his speech on the 50th anniversary of the Spelling Congress, described the Albanian language as our soul and national identity and a legacy of our ancestors.
“50 years ago, the Spelling Congress (1972), a culminating event in our national history, decided on the platform of the unified Albanian language.
This congress was part of a journey full of challenges of our nation from the Congress of Bitola (1908), which laid the foundations for the unification of the alphabet, excluding other alphabets, to the Congress of Elbasan (1909), which paved the way for the implementation of the decisions of The Congress of Bitola with the opening of the Normal School of Elbasan (1909) for broad public education, as well as the historic decisions of the Literary Commission of Shkodra, which for the first time took important steps towards a unifying language policy in the service of the unified language , as a request that legitimized and made the political unity of the nation functional.
According to the President, the need to realize a standard language was as organic as the need for the development of the state and national education.
The President added that standardization helps to strengthen the common linguistic and national identity, in an increasingly large space of speakers. The head of state admitted that this anniversary comes with challenges for the Albanian language and for the community of academics and linguists in Albania, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Montenegro and the diaspora.
