President Ilir Meta has paved the way for Bajram Begaj to become head of state. Ilir Meta signed LIVE from Istanbul the decree for the dismissal of Bajram Begaj’s military, thus paving the way for the vote this afternoon in Parliament as President of the Republic of Albania.
Earlier, the President said that he would respect any decision of the Assembly by voting.
Bajram Begaj is in the military and the law prohibits him from engaging in any activity other than military service. Consequently, in order to go to Parliament to be elected President, Begaj has to resign from the military. He did this by resigning from the Minister of Defense, but he had to be relieved of his duties by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, who is Ilir Meta.
The voting is expected to start at 18:00 and then a secret ballot will be voted on the name of the President.
The Constitution stipulates that in the fourth and fifth rounds the President can be elected with 71 votes. The left has more than 71 votes in the Assembly, but the challenge remains with the number that Bajram Begaj will receive.
