Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias contacted Prime Minister Edi Rama after the arrest of Fredi Beleri for vote buying.
The conversation between them comes after the Greek ambassador in Tirana, Konstantina Kamitsi, following Dendia’s instructions, held a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Sources told ABC News that the ambassador has not sent a note of protest to Albania about this event.
Beleri’s arrest comes a few hours before the May 14 elections. He was arrested shortly after midnight in his bar in Himara after an operation by the police and the Prosecutor’s Office of Vlora.
Rama reacted to his arrest by saying that: “The arrest of the opposition candidate for Himara Fredi Beleri by order of the prosecutor’s office constitutes a great trial for justice on the eve of the elections, which means that his violation of the law must be proven and his detention legally motivated!”
