Court summoned this Thursday Shkëlzen Berisha, the son of former Prime Minister Sali Berisha, to testify in the process for the Gerdeci file. In today’s session, together with Shkëlzen Berisha, the court decided to call former minister Aldo Bumci as a witness.

Today’s session was postponed due to the absence in the process of former Minister Mediu. Journalist Ermal Vija told ABC Neës that the reason for his absence in court was the plenary session in the Assembly, where the 2024 budget was approved.

On his part, Fatmir Mediu addressed a letter to the special court, informing him about today’s plenary session and where he should be present. The next session was set by the court on December 14 at 09:00, besides Shkëlza Berisha and Aldo Bumci, the court also requested 5 other witnesses.

The Special Prosecutor’s Office against Corruption and Organized Crime, SPAK announced on February 8, 2023 the transfer of the case to the charge of Fatmir Mediu, accused of the criminal offenses of “abuse of duty”, committed in collaboration and “abuse of duty”, in cooperation with military subject-command cadre.

Mediu is accused that in relation to the process of demilitarization and dismantling of ammunition that took place in the premises of the former “Tank Brigade”, in the village of Gërdec, Vorë Municipality, in cooperation with other officials of the Ministry of Defense as well as persons who had the quality of the military commanding staff, has issued several by-laws contrary to the law.

Prosecution says that these acts related to the sale and dismantling of a quantity of ammunition “damaged the legitimate interests of the state and brought unfair advantages to the companies SAC inc and Albademil sh.p.k.”.

Reopening of the case against Mediu was initiated after 12 years by the initiative of the family of one of the victims of the explosion in March 2008 in the premises of the former “Tank Brigade”, with 26 lives lost and hundreds injured.

According to the petitioners and SPAK, after the legal changes of 2012 and 2017, the deputy no longer has parliamentary immunity for criminal prosecution or his trial and therefore there is no obstacle for the Mediu investigation.
