Former Minister Lefter Koka was arrested this Monday by order of Special Prosecution against Organized Crime and Corruption. The operational forces arrived this Tuesday morning in Durrës. Former Minister was arrested in connection with the file of incinerators, where according to SPAK, accused on the “Abuse of Duty” and the criminal offense of “passive corruption” while he was Minister of Environment.
The incinerator scandal has been going on in the country for years, but it seems that Koka is the first to be arrested, which has caused great economic damage to Albanians. It has been learned besides Koka, two other people have been arrested.
For all three they will provide details during the day through an official response. A few months ago the Democratic Party sued Lefter Koka over the decisions given that led to the opening of the incinerators.
In the lawsuit, Democrats allege that Koka had abused office by allowing environmental permits for incinerators. In addition to the DP, a lawsuit was sent to SPAK by the SMI with the same object for Koka. The former minister has repeatedly denied the accusations against him, stating that they are made for purely political purposes, however it is now up to the SPAK to confirm the accusations in the GJKKO when it requests the security measure for Koka.
Koka won the mandate of deputy with the Socialist Party in the elections of April 2021, but a few days later he resigned for reasons he never explained.
