On the European Day of Remembrance of the Victims of totalitarian regimes, the leader of the Democratic Party Lulzim Basha said that this is a day of reflection for a national wound. This wound, according to Basha, continues to heal as Albania has not yet overcome it.
The leader of the Democrats says that the memory and respect for the victims of the “most inhuman regime in Europe” should go hand in hand with the awareness that much remains to be done.
“To reflect and draw lessons and strength to not allow any form of authoritarianism to separate us from Europe, the West and freedom,” Basha said in a Facebook post.

“The European Day of Remembrance for the Victims of totalitarian and authoritarian regimes is not only a day of remembrance but also a reflection of a national wound that continues to suffer, as Albania has not yet overcome it.
Remembrance and respect for the victims of the most inhumane regime in Europe, which denied freedoms and rights, human dignity and faith in God, must go hand in hand with the awareness that much remains to be done, for the executioners to remain on that side of the history that all of Europe has assigned to bloody regimes.
Because that wing has never been right and this is confirmed by 34,135 Albanians imprisoned and convicted for political reasons, 59,009 citizens were interned in concentration camps, 7,022 of whom died from shah treatment, 984 died in regime prisons and 6,027 men and women, boys and girls executed with and without trial during the dictatorship.
We Albanians have more victims than many nations in the democratic world to commemorate. Therefore, I invite you to remember, honor and bow before the sacrifice of the victims caused by the communist dictatorship of Enver Hoxha and to reflect. To reflect and draw lessons and strength to not allow any form of authoritarianism to separate us from Europe, the West and freedom.
