Ruropean Union’s special envoy for dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, and the US special envoy for the Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, will visit Kosovo this Monday regarding the situation created in the north of the country and on Tuesday they will be in Serbia.

In addition to meetings with heads of institutions in Pristina, Lajçak and Escobar are expected to visit the north of the country as well. In a statement to the media a few days ago, the European Union urgently requested the calming of the situation, otherwise there will be serious consequences for both sides.

“The European Union is ready to implement established measures. Failure to de-escalate tensions will lead to negative consequences. We expect Kosovo to act in a non-de-escalation manner and immediately suspend police operations in the vicinity of municipal buildings in the north of Kosovo.

Mayors of municipalities must temporarily perform their duties in other facilities than municipal buildings. Early elections should be announced as soon as possible in all four municipalities and organized in a fully inclusive manner. We expect Kosovo Serbs to participate in these elections.

We express concern about the state of the highest readiness of the Serbian Armed Forces. The European Union expects Kosovo and Serbia to act responsibly and engage immediately in the Dialogue mediated by the EU to find a sustainable solution to the situation in the north of Kosovo that guarantees protection, security and participatory democracy for all citizens. and paves the way for the implementation of the Agreement on the Road to Normalization and its Annex.

This includes the start without any delay or further preconditions of the work for the establishment of the Association of Municipalities with a Serbian Majority”, the statement said.
