Germany remembers today a historic day – the fall of the Berlin Wall. The main ceremony is attended by German President Steinmeier, Chancellor Merkel and important personalities from around the world.
It has been a week since the German capital, Berlin, has returned to be the epicenter of key activities marking the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. More than 200 activities throughout the week have been taking place in this city since Monday.
President Steinmeier has also invited the presidents of Poland, Hungary, as well as the Czech Republic and Slovakia to mark the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Developments in these socialist countries have played an important role in the fall of the Berlin Wall.
An important memorial site for the victims of the Berlin Wall is the Bernauer Street, the symbol of Berlin’s division.
Union takes time
The unification of Germany, according to Chancellor Merkel, will take more time than was thought.
Christoph Hein criticized the way the union took place. “There was no union, but a membership, which you might call annexation,” he told Neues Deutschland on Saturday. Despite critical voices, more than two-thirds of Germans call the fall of the Wall a fortunate occasion.
