Former Prime Minister Sali Berisha has called on the US State Department not to allow Ambassador Yuri Kim to interfere in court proceedings in Albania. Berisha reacted again to his clash with the ambassador and reiterated that the chief diplomat is interfering in the processes of the Democratic Party, which have ended at the doors of the courts.
In a recent post on social networks, Berisha considers it a serious and unacceptable act, while adding that the courts are presumed to be independent.
“During these days, in my press conferences, this morning and last Friday, I informed the media and the public that Ms. Kim, US Ambassador to Tirana has intervened in the process of adjudicating the appeal filed against the decision of the Tirana court to the registration of the Statute of the Assembly of December 11, 2021, an appeal which is in flagrant contradiction with the code of civil procedure and the practice of the courts to date.
In order to intervene in this matter, she has sought the help of important Socialist Party governors. Today, right after my denunciation of this intervention, Ambassador Kim admitted via Twitter that she has interfered in the justice system.
Considering this interference a serious and unacceptable act, I add that the courts are presumed to be independent and any interference regardless of make-up constitutes an open violation of this independence and violates the laws and constitution of the country and the international principles of independent justice.When pressure and interference come from foreign diplomats, in addition to violating the sovereignty and laws of the country, they also violate international conventions that strictly prohibit the return of diplomats to political actors.
I call on the State Department not to allow the unauthorized interference of Ambassador Kim in the judicial process and the independence of the judiciary in Albania”.
This is the second call within today that Sali Berisha addresses to the USA. Earlier today, at a press conference, he called on the US government to ask Ambassador Yuri Kim in Tirana to stop the pressure on the court for the process related to the party seal, but also the attacks against him.
