Bajram Begaj is the Socialist Party nominee for the post of the new President of the Republic. Begaj accepted the invitation, while Prime Minister Edi Rama received him last night in office.
Today, in a special session in the Assembly, the fourth round is expected to take place to elect the new head of state, after the first three failed and the opposition withdrew from the agreement with the SP. Only 71 votes are enough for this round.
Before going to the Assembly, Begaj’s name will be sent in advance to the SP Parliamentary Group, which will convene on Saturday morning around 10:00.
The signatures of at least 20 deputies are needed to support a candidate, who will then be formally deposited in the Assembly. The deadline set by the Conference of Presidents is 12:00 today, and then, at 16:00, the Law Commission will meet, which will review the constitutional legal criteria of the candidate proposed by the SP.
At 18:00 the Assembly will hold a session to exhaust the fourth round. This time the Assembly has a registered name, that of Bajram Begaj. The SP has the votes to elect the new head of state, as 71 votes are enough in this round.
Meanwhile, Enkelejd Alibeaj’s group has stated that they will not be in the Assembly to vote, while the PD part led by Sali Berisha claimed that they will be in the hall to vote against. However, both sides have opposed Begaj’s candidacy.
