Greece and Albania are expected to renew the Friendship Pact for another five years after its expiration next year. “Kathimerini” reports referring to Greek diplomatic sources that the Albanian government has given its consent in this regard and things are on the right track.
The renewal of the pact, according to the Greek media, comes after the proposal of the Greek government to the Albanian one.
Something like this is confirmed for abcnews.al by sources from the Albanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who emphasize that this is a routine practice after the signing of the first pact in 1996, which is already renewed every five years.
“The pact for these five years expires in December 2022 and needs to be renewed for the next five years,” the sources suggest.
Recall that for the first time, the Pact of Friendship between the two countries was signed in 1996 and had a duration of 20 years. It was renovated in 2018 with a duration of five years and is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
In recent years, there has been a significant improvement in relations between Greece and Albania. Both countries chose The Hague to resolve the Sea issue, which Greece, for its part, is using as a good example to quell conflicts between neighbors, thus sending a direct message to Turkey.
