Albania signed this Tuesday a bilateral agreement with the United States of America on extradition. The agreement was signed at the Palace of Brigades by the US Ambassador to Tirana Yuri Kim and the Minister of Justice Etilda Gjonaj.

The ceremony is also attended by the General Prosecutor Olsian Çela, the head of SPAK Arben Kraja, heads of justice institutions and representatives of the US Embassy.

Minister Gjonaj described this agreement as a historic event and said that it is a clear signal to all violators of the law.

“It is a historic event that marks a new step in judicial cooperation. We have gathered to sign the extradition agreement between the two countries 100 years after the first agreement. The new agreement replaces the bilateral extradition treaty signed by Faik Konica. This agreement is the result of long work and very close cooperation. With the new agreement, we realize the updating and categorization of criminal offenses on the basis of which extradition is requested.

An important step forward in the fight against crime. The agreement serves as a clear and firm signal to all law violators that no one will find any refuge to evade criminal law in the US or Albania. The act that we formalize today through this signature, is a clear sign of the unwavering will of the Albanian government, in terms of law enforcement and strengthening the rule of law, but also proof of the unstinting support of our friend and ally, the United States of America, in the realization of this common objective”, declared Gjonaj./abcnews.al
