SPAK has called Fatmir Mediu again regarding the investigations into the Gërdec file. ABC learns that Mediu will appear at the premises of the Special Procuracy at 1:30 p.m. In October 2021, SPAK sought to re-indict the former Minister of Defense, Fatmir Mediu, in relation to the Gërdec tragedy, where 26 people lost their lives and over 300 others were injured.
After the decision of the Special Court of Appeal, the Prosecutor’s Office registered criminal proceedings against him for “Abuse of duty”, carried out in cooperation, as well as “Abuse of duty” in cooperation with a military subject, command staff. Mediu was one of those accused of abuse of office for the 2008 event where Albania experienced a tragedy from the explosion of a military weapons warehouse in Gërdec, near Tirana.
The case against him was suspended by the Supreme Court in 2009, as the law of the time prohibited the trial of a person with immunity, but was later reopened by SPAK.
The Special Prosecutor’s Office is expected to investigate the former minister’s responsibility in the tragic event of March 2008, an event for which Mediu has been charged twice with abuse of power under the Criminal Code and the Military Criminal Code, but was never tried as he was protected by parliamentary immunity.
