EU Ambassador Christiane Hohmann spoke from Korça about the EU-Western Balkans summit that will be held in Tirana on December 6.
Hohmann said that the organization of this summit outside the EU countries shows the importance for the membership of these countries in the European Union. Regarding the level of criminality and corruption in the country, Hohmann mentions the EC report saying that the fight against corruption remains an important issue.
“In fact, it is the first time that the EU-Western Balkans summit is organized outside the EU and comes to the Western Balkans region. This also shows the importance of the entire region and the membership of the Western Balkan countries in the EU. Also the work that these countries will do towards the EU and the fact that the leaders of all countries will come to Albania on December 6.
You may know that about 10 days ago, the EC published the annual report for all the countries of the region, including Albania. It is a report that includes the state of the country. For all those who are interested, an important part of the report deals with the rule of law. The report is clear in terms of consolidation and to fight issues such as the fight against corruption,” said Hohmann.
The next EU-Western Balkans summit will take place on December 6 in Tirana. The news was announced by the president of the European Council, Charles Michel, through a post on Twitter.
“The Western Balkans is a key priority for the European Union. The EU and the Western Balkans need each other,” wrote Charles Michel in a tweet.
The summit comes at a time when Albania and North Macedonia have started negotiations, while Kosovo is awaiting visa liberalization and Bosnia-Herzegovina is awaiting the status of a candidate country.
