The new academic year has started all over the country this Monday, with a part of the lecturers who are on boycott, demanding a salary increase. The teachers of the University of Tirana have been protesting for a long time, as they did not agree with the 7% increase proposed by the government.
They have announced that from 10:00 to 12:00 in the morning they will gather to boycott the lesson, as a sign of protest for their demands. While some are on strike, the problematic situation with filling student quotas continues in many universities.
At the “Ismail Qemali” university in Vlora, this year started with nearly 55% of the registration quotas filled, the lowest average of students in the study programs.
Branches such as teaching, physics, mathematics and chemistry are in the minimum quotas and still risk closure. This year, the University of Vlora had about 1,200 free quotas, while the number of registered students did not exceed 700.
A similar situation at the University of Elbasan, where out of 2573 quotas, only 1435 have been filled. The lecturers of “Aleksander Xhuvani” University will gather at 10:15 at the Economic and Central Faculty to request a salary increase.
In the “Luigj Gurakuqi” university of Shkodra, 950 students are registered, while in total there are about 5 thousand at all levels. This year, no program has been closed.
The rector of the university, Suzana Golemi, has stated that she strongly supports the teachers’ protest and has emphasized that no action will be taken against those who boycott classes. /abcnews.al
