Today, August 26, is the 112th anniversary of the birth of one of the most generous people that human history has known, Mother Teresa. Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu, officially known as Mother Teresa, was born on August 26, 1910 in Skopje, but with “homes” all over the world. She dedicated her life to all the people who were in need.
Mother Teresa was born in 1910 in Skopje, as Anjeza Gonxhe Bojaxhiu. At the age of 18, she joined the Irish monastery, where she took the name of Sister Mary Teresa. Months later, she left for India, in Kolkata, the city then known as Calcutta, in January 1929. She taught girls at St. Mary’s School.
There, she took her final profession and became Mother Teresa. According to the accounts, almost 20 years later, during a train journey in India, she felt a call from Jesus to take care of the poor. Mother Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity to serve all the poor, which she did until the end of her life.
Mother Teresa has been honored with the highest awards and honors, including: the 1962 Ramon Magsaysay Peace Prize and the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize.
On October 19, 2003, she was beatified and named “Blessed Teresa of Calcutta”. In order to be canonized as a saint, she had to be recognized with a second miracle, based on the rules of the Catholic Church.
A second miracle was recognized by Pope Francis in December 2015, paving the way for her to be declared a saint by the Roman Catholic Church. Her canonization took place on September 4, 2016, one day before the 19th anniversary of her death (September 5), which is also known as her feast day.
A controversial figure both during her life and after her death (September 5, 1997), Mother Teresa was widely admired by many for her charitable works.
