The chairman of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, reacted after the majority announced on Friday night that their candidate for president would be the Major General Bajram Begaj.
In his reaction, the leader of the Democrats calls on the current president Ilir Meta to defend the Constitution and not to allow what he described as “a flagrant and extremely dangerous violation of it.”
Berisha’s opposition to the candidacy seems to come from the fact that he is an active military man and still holds the post of Chief of Defense.
Citing Article 167 of the Constitution, the former Prime Minister says that Begaj’s candidacy for the post of head of state is dangerous and creates constitutional precedents that “tomorrow one of his successors will use to usurp, even with a coup, the institution of the President.
