The surprise meeting on Electoral Reform has ended. The two political representatives of the extra-parliamentary opposition, Oerd Bylykbashi and Petrit Vasili, said that this is the first step to realize the reform.
Asked by reporters why they agreed to sit down with Damian Gjiknuri at a time when the opposition has opposed him, Vasili said: “We have not changed any position but we do not impose the other party’s elections. We are here with the conviction of creating a solid process. ”
Details of the meeting were also provided by the two co-chairs of the Special Election Reform Commission.
Statements:
Oerd Bylykbashi: We, as the opposition and the other party, agreed to start the Electoral Reform process. This document today guarantees what we have long sought. Electoral reform is done by consensus, and needs to be comprehensive. In this mechanism we will also have the assistance of internationals.
Petrit Vasili: One step has been taken to the key requirement of the Bundestag. The foundation of principles is a foundation that enables all to express and realize inclusiveness. I believe that at this moment a step has been taken in this direction, it is an opportunity to move forward.
Damian Gjiknuri: We have an agreement between the political parties for the united opposition to be involved in the discussions on electoral reform. We have said that we are ready to cooperate with the opposition. The meetings will be the main purpose of electoral reform.
Rudina Hajdari: The Presence of the DP and the SMI shows that they have accepted that the right way to solve the problems is the institutional one, not the one with the protests in which is promoted a bad image of Albania. Today the DP and the SMI have accepted that the road to resolve this crisis is to concrete ideas and plans. Albanians need sovereignty back in parliament. They need an Electoral Code in order to be represented with dignity. I guarantee you that we will fight hard for this thing./abcnews.al
