The special envoy of the United States of America for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, declared that the best solution for Kosovo and Serbia is to accept the three-point plan proposed by the European Union. Escobar said there are indications that Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic is ready to accept this plan.

“We have positive indications that President Vucic is ready to accept it, but Prime Minister Kurti needs to be convinced a little more“, said Escobar.

Asked what the consequences will be if Serbia and Kosovo do not meet the demands of the international community to de-escalate the situation in the north of Kosovo, Escobar said that both countries will miss numerous opportunities.

“The consequences are not punitive measures, but they are lost opportunities that both countries will lose if they reject the proposal for exiting the crisis,” said Escobar, explaining that for Kosovo this means moving away from close international partners and partners in the region, while Serbia will be further away from the EU entrance.

“Our partnership with Kosovo is a partnership with the people of Kosovo, not with a political party or figure. Our commitment to KFOR and investment in the future of Kosovo remains strong”, concluded Escobar.

Escobar made these statements before participating in the international conference of the Dubrovnik Forum in the panel “Western Balkans: The new Euro-Atlantic moment”.
