Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku has commented on the agreement signed by the Albanian government with the Italian state for the establishment of two camps in Lezhë for housing immigrants.
Balluku said that Albanian politicians deal with the skin colour of the immigrants who will be temporarily sheltered in Albania, while adding that the Albanians themselves have suffered the prejudices of others.
“The agreement signed by the prime minister in Rome and the prime minister of Italy has gone through the entire anticipated process in the government and will go to the Albanian parliament for ratification. It is not an agreement that has completed its journey.
The prime minister has made clear the reason for this agreement and no one should worry about the real reason because it is what the prime minister said, nor about the purpose and legal framework of this agreement, which respects international law and defines detail the obligations of the parties. How the property will work, who will manage it, how long this agreement lasts and everything else.
If it was done between two EU countries, it would be normal. We consider Albania a European country, we have an opposite country separated only by 70 miles and we understand very well the problems that the neighboring country has today. When it comes to solidarity, we are always in solidarity with a strategic and irreplaceable partner such as the Italian state.
I am sorry that we have Albanian politicians and diligent Albanians in the public opinion who, for reasons of political war with the government, deal with the color of the skin of the immigrants who will be temporarily sheltered in Albania.
We are a people who have suffered on our backs the prejudices of others despite the fact that we have the same skin color as other Europeans.
Just as we would be in a completely different situation today if we had not been saved by Italy during the hell of the 90s.
It is a long road, it will go to the Parliament, you will hear it in the committee. No one from the government has a problem speaking about an international agreement which is transparent and anyone can access and read it,” Balluku said.
