George W. Bush is the first president of the United States that has visit Albania.
On June 10, 2007, he and his wife, Laura, were welcomed at Rinas Airport by the then Foreign Minister, Lulzim Basha.
Afterwards, President Bush met at the Palace of Brigades with the President of Albania, Aleksandër Moisiu. Moisiu awarded President Bush the highest decoration for his contribution on supporting the Albanian cause.
In a joint conference with the then Prime Minister Sali Berisha, Bush praised the high level of relations between Albania and the United States.
Bush said the United States will always support Albania’s desire to join NATO. He also praised the religious tolerance in Albania.
“I expressed the desire for Albania to join NATO, I am a supporter of this” said the American president.
Bush praised the contribution of Albanian military troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. He encouraged Albanian politicians to work together to complete the standards of NATO membership.
Bush met in Fushë-Krujë a group of Albanian businessmen who had received financial support from the US Development Agency.
After the meeting, he met many enthusiastic citizens./abcnews.al
